10 Weight Loss Tips for the Summer

Summer is in full-swing, the birds are singing and the beach bodies have emerged. The good news is, it’s not too late to work off the effect those cold nights, large meals and lazy weekends have had on your body. Here are 10 proven ways to ditch the winter weight to reveal a leaner, meaner you this summer.

Weight Loss Tip No. 1: Cut Back on the Booze

Wanna’ lose weight AND save money? Then set a goal to halve your alcohol consumption this Summer. Beer, especially, is a calorie dense beverage. At the same time, it is making you more dehydrated. Every can you don’t have is keeping another 180 calories from piling onto your body. As the weather heats up, drinking more water will naturally help you to curb your alcohol consumption.

Weight Loss Tip No. 2: Eat Your Evening Meal Earlier

Most people eat their dinner late and then go to bed on a full stomach. That makes it very hard for your body to digest what you’ve eaten. Then, when you wake up you’ll be feeling fat and sluggish. Give your body a break and eat your evening meal earlier. Leave a minimum two-hour window between eating and retiring and your body will be a lot happier – and you will sleep a lot better.

Weight Loss Tip No. 3: Ditch the Car

Now that the weather is improving, do you really need to jump in the car for a five-minute ride to the grocery store? How about walking? It will provide you with the opportunity to relax and unwind as you burn off extra calories. While you’re at it, why not consider walking to work? You will actually feel more in control of your day when you arrive (even if it does mean getting up a little earlier).

Weight Loss Tip No. 4: Chew Your Food

The longer you chew, the longer it will take to consume your food. This helps to control your portion sizes and that will result in fewer calories going into your body. Because it takes about 20 minutes for your brain to signal to your stomach that you are full, eating your food more slowly will definitely help you to consume fewer calories.

Weight Loss Tip No. 5: Up Your Fruit Consumption

In winter we tend not to eat much fruit. But now that summer is here, it’s time to stock up on bananas, apples, oranges and other seasonal goodies. The fiber will fill you up so that you won’t be tempted to binge eat. Many fruits also contain pectin, which is a great digestive aid.

Weight Loss Tip No. 6: Nix the Milk & Sugar

Caffeine may give you a short energy hit. But the sugar and milk will drag you down. A cuppa’ Joe before a workout can give you a boost, but make it a long black. Instead of sugar, you can pour in a pack of Splenda.

Weight Loss Tip No. 7: Find A Fitness Buddy

Team up with a friend and set your Summer fitness resolutions together. You’ll be able to feed off each other’s energy. And knowing that the other person is waiting for you to show up will give you the extra push to get out the door.

Weight Loss Tip No. 8: Get a Personal Trainer

Signing up for a few sessions with a personal trainer will get you back on the fitness fast track in a hurry. Not only will a trainer be able to construct a workout plan to help you to get rid of the winter cobwebs, she’ll also be a great source of inspiration and motivation as you get yourself back into the Summer training zone.

Weight Loss Tip No. 10: Shop on the Perimeter of the Supermarket

All supermarkets are laid out in virtually the same way. The outside aisles are where all the freshest foods are located, while those toward the center are full of all the stuff that can get you into trouble with your diet. Think about it . . . fruit, nuts, eggs and other dairy items, meats, poultry and fish are usually all found around the perimeter of the store. Sure some items that you may want or need are within the aisles, like peanut butter, olive oil, various other nuts as well as other things like oatmeal and bottled water. But the other things you’ll find there are probably a no-no for your diet and should be avoided. So if you’re trying to lose weight this summer, just remember — stay on the outside of the store, and probably you can’t go wrong.
